The use of the word consciousness means neuroscientists for awareness.  This is also its common meaning in the dictionary.  In this sense, its work is dependent on the senses like eyes, nose, ears.  When the sense organs give information about the surroundings, the brain gives their conclusions based on previous experience.  In spiritual philosophy, consciousness is almost synonymous with God, divine or absolute power.  Spirituality says that the eternal part of consciousness is present in every expression of it.  Therefore, consciousness exists in all living and non-living creation.  There is consciousness in every atom and atom-particles but, it is invisible and expressed very weakly.

Scientists argue about the place of consciousness in the body, while the philosopher dismisses it, saying that not only every cell, every atom has consciousness.  According to existing knowledge, consciousness is in the brain.  This means that increased levels of activity in some parts of the brain have been linked to experiences of consciousness.

It is so little expressed in inanimate matter that it is considered to be consciousnessless.  But if we try to know it carefully, then there is a glimpse of consciousness lying in the substance.  If the furniture gets love and care, it lasts a long time.  Machines also fit the equation with their owner.  Consciousness is better expressed in plants.  Maharishi Arvind's collaborator Sriman in Puducherry used to know which vegetable is eager to get into his hands.  Consciousness is even more expressed in beings.  But consciousness is much more expressed in humans than in beings, but in humans, only a small part is expressed and a large part is dormant.  There is no reason to believe that the process of evolution has stopped with humans.  What will be the future development of consciousness is seen in a few people who know about past life, future events or events in distant places.  The ultimate goal is to reach supramental consciousness, which will be an almost perfect expression of consciousness in the conditions of the earth.  But, over-expression of consciousness or over-expression in few people does not make human unique.  Uniqueness is the ability of a human being to develop consciousness through his efforts.  The great men of the Vedic sages and other sects have succeeded in developing a great sense of consciousness through self-purification and concentration.  His description gives us an indication of which direction consciousness can develop.

Other information

One, it develops in depth.  A person acquires depth from within and there he is aware of something which is much higher and greater than that.  This is the divine spark, present within all of us.  Two, it develops horizontally.  We can call it an extension of consciousness.  Such a person becomes familiar with the divine spark present in the rest of the world.  It is easier to see God in Rama than in Ravana but, as the consciousness expands, one begins to realize God in all humans, beings, plants and finally inanimate objects.  Three, it develops radially in time from the center beyond the time and space.  A person's consciousness now realizes absolute reality.  Eventually the person starts seeing every person and everything around him in a different form of that one consciousness.  He who is 'one' is greater than the sum total of all consciousnesses.
