The biggest reason for this is that the teachers do not want to go to the schools located in the villages, that is why the government is planning to take action.  According to the information, the state government may gradually close schools which have less than 100 children.  State Education Minister Bhupendra Singh Chudasam said, "To improve the standard of education, we are thinking of merging the schools in nearby schools where there is less number of teachers and students.  First we will provide transport facility to the students of higher class and then close some classes.  Gradually more classes will be closed after adequate verification.

He adds, 'The matter is not about saving money.  Our effort is to increase the quality of education by giving more number of teachers and better infrastructure.  The option to merge schools may be in improving education using available resources.  The Right to Education Act also provides for transport facilities to children.

A survey by the Education Department of Gujarat has revealed that out of 32,722 government schools in the state, there are 12,000 such schools which have only one or two teachers.  In this survey, it has also been found that there are 15,171 schools in the state, in which less than 100 children study.  The state government is planning to merge many such schools.
